    Default thinning paints

how do you know if you're thinning the paint too much?

    background:

I been spraying at around 15-17 psi and have diluted 1:1 which gave a nice looking consistency to the paint.

I primed with alclad2 clear base.

after 3 coats the under layer is still showing through...

does that mean the paint is too thin or is it that I didn't apply enough paint with each layer?

Red is a difficult colour, up there with white and yellow. I'm about to lay down my fifth coat of red and it probably won't finish there. Whereas green has only taken a couple of coats.

1:1 MAY be a little thin for red or yellow... it depends on paint brand, etc., but you might want to go a tad thicker with the consistency.

What's that red paint, laquer, enamel or waterbase? Normally if a paint is already thinned out for the airbrush I wouldn't use a 1:1 ratio I would probably use more of a 3:1. This should keep the coats down to a minimum.

For HOK metallic red I do 2 to 1...but I also use a silver or gold basecoat too though.

Red goes best over red, white, or silver. Your paint isn't too thin, sometimes it just takes more coats.

It'd be nice to do a tutorial or a guide for thinning paints for some of the most used airbrush paints like HOK, Model Masters, Testors, and whatever else people use. I myself would like to know a bit more about it since I am new to airbrushing. I usually do it 2:1 paint and thinner, but not sure what is best to thin Model Master acrylics with, any suggestions?
