    Default TF eye colors

    Do you stick with:

    1) the cartoon color scheme of blue for Autobots / Red for Decepts

    2) The original toy's color (IE yellow for prime)

    3) Whatever you feel works best

I sometimes am at a loss for what will look best, but I think I'm trending towards whatever I feel like doing lol.

I default with blue for Autobots and red for Decepticons, but whatever fits the custom better.

If I was doing a classics Prime, I would do blue eyes, but If I was doing Diaclone style Prime, I'd do yellow.

Also there are some deviations that must be upheld. Swindle should always have purple eyes, Laserbeak should be yellow (except movie LB, which are red)

Then there are occasions that call for creativity. I had a client who wanted an MP Grimlock but was torn between blue (Toon) or red (Toy). The fix was simple, I made a circuit where he could switch between red or blue LEDs independently for each head.

I'd research the original figure as well as all iterations if possible, including media. Then make the call based on your research and what fit the custom best.

I am, for example, making a custom Go-Bot Gaurdian Dive-Dive. the Original sports a black visor, however I will be adding blue LEDs to the visor. Just my preference and I want it to fit better with current Classics type figures.

I tend to search character resources and find as many reference pics as I can, then choose the color that looks the best. Color scheme can change the shade also, I have 3-4 different shades of red and blue that I alternate between, depending on the particular project.

I have two shades: LEDs on and LEDs off, LOL

Seriously, JB makes a valid point, and subtle variations in eye shades can go a long way too.

just do what feels right. I tend to always do a cross between the origional toy scheme and the cartoon.

I stick with the blue=Autobot, red=Decepticon for the most part.

Also, I'm still trying to get my eyes to show up better. As you know, Dez, Kup's eyes look better in person than in the pictures. Wish I could figure out a way to brighten them, but still use the same method for color. Right now I lay down a chrome like silver, then a clear blue or red.

If you want to brighten them up, one way that I've found looks pretty nice is to wet blend with white toward the center of the eye. I heard a lot of people were doing it, so I gave it a shot and it looks pretty sweet.

That's the ticket to glow effects too by the way...

Yup, figured as much, I think the reason I never pulled it off before and finally got it now is having the paint thinned right. Too thick, and it actually grabs the other paint layer and pulls it off.
